Experience the Future of the Microsoft Platform
The Professional Developers’ Day (PDD) is a Microsoft exclusive, single-day event designed to give you an early preview of Visual Studio 2010 and .NET Framework v4.0 as unveiled at the 2008 Professional Developers Conference (PDC) in Los Angeles.
We guarantee there will be no slides and no marketing fluff. Instead we’ll be delivering lots of code and lots of demos using the very latest technologies from Microsoft, including samples and more for you to take away. With so much new technology to choose from we have split the day into 10 self-contained sessions, each digging surprisingly deeply into what we believe are the most relevant and impactful changes in the .NET Framework and Visual Studio. Our goal is to ensure you finish the day able to identify which technologies will help you deliver better solutions in the future and hence focus your own research time in the right areas. And to add to the fun, we’ll be showcasing a range of ‘after hours’ technologies in the Expo area, including XNA, robotics, and Photosynth.
The Microsoft Professional Developers’ Day takes place on Monday 23 March at The Barbican and forms part of the DevWeek 2009 pre-conference sessions. You can choose to attend just the PDD or you may also register for all or part of the DevWeek 2009 conference.

Speakers
Mike Taulty – Mike works in the Developer and Platform Group at Microsoft in the UK, where he has spent the past few years helping developers understand and get the best from the Microsoft platform. Prior to this, Mike spent three years with Microsoft Consulting Services as a consultant on developer technologies. Before joining Microsoft, Mike spent the previous nine years working as a software developer for a number of enterprises, consultancies and software vendors, using a variety of operating system, client, communication and server technologies. Mike holds a BSc Hons (1st Class) in Computer Science from the University of Leeds.
Eric Nelson – After many years of developing on UNIX/RDBMS (and being able to get mortgages) Eric joined Microsoft in 1996 as a Technical Evangelist (and stopped being able to get mortgages due to his new ‘unusual job title’ in the words of his bank manager). He has spent most of his time working with ISVs to help them architect solutions which make use of the latest Microsoft technologies – from the beta of ASP 1.0 through to ASP.NET, from MTS to WCF/WF and from the beta of SQL Server 6.5 through to SQL Server 2008. Along the way he has met lots of smart and fun developers – and been completely stumped by many of their questions! In July 2008 he switched role from an Application Architect to a Developer Evangelist in the Developer and Platform Group. Currently Eric’s interests include digging into LINQ to Entities, ADO.NET Data Services and switching from C# to Visual Basic development.
Mike Ormond – Mike is a Developer Evangelist focusing on Office and web development technologies. Ever since he can remember, he’s been interested in ‘how stuff works’, so an engineering career was a natural progression. After completing his degree at Strathclyde University, he toyed with transforms in imaging systems, played with hoppers in payment systems, scheduled headless clients in automated test solutions and helped real customers in product support! Nowadays he spends his time thinking about web and Office development and worrying about how to keep pace with change and whether or not he locked the back door. Outside of work, Mike’s passions range from hill-walking to classic cars.
Giles Davies – Giles works in the Developer and Platform Group at Microsoft in the UK, specialising in Visual Studio Team System. After gaining a Zoology degree he moved naturally into a 15 year software development career, and was involved in projects ranging from tax to oil and gas systems, working for a variety of development organisations and software vendors. He is a strong advocate of using the right processes and the right tools to deliver successful projects. Giles believes in the value of architectural modelling, continuous integration and the importance of beer in a balanced diet.
Key Technologies
This event will be looking at technologies that are in the early stage of preview as we develop the next versions of Visual Studio and the .NET Framework.
To help prepare for “version Next”, you might want to spend some time refreshing where we are right now in terms of the languages, frameworks, tools and services.
